Stone Garden Beds Update

I thought long and hard about the ultimate design of my dream garden. For 3 years, I’ve pictured my mornings wandering through the garden with a cup of coffee in hand, and what that dream morning walk in the garden looked like for me.

First Load of Stone
Zinnias Beds in my Market Style Garden

So far, I’ve just done a market style garden (rows) while I planned the final design. The reason I decided on raised stone garden beds is that I want this garden to be more of a permanent feature of the home, just like a greenhouse, a new barn, or any other addition would, rather than just a plot of land you have to keep up with.

The Materials

I chose tumbled stone rather than field stone. Two reasons:

1. They are smaller stones and therefore easier for someone who is inexperienced to lay.

2. The colors and shapes create more of that classic old world, built in the pastures of Scotland look. haha! They are more expensive, but as Tyson always says…”Buy the best and you only cry ONCE!” lol.

For the Mortar, I wanted white, not grey! We couldn’t find anything but regular ol’ grey mortar at all the hardware stores here, so we finally called a local brick company and they had the white mortar!

PRO-TIP from unprofessionals lol: we used GREY mortar on the inside stones so we didn’t waste the white mortar that I wanted for the outside walls!

Using a grey mortar base layer and on the inside stones to save the white grout for outside only!

The Work…

So now that we are IN the project, how do we feel about actually doing this work ourselves?? It feels SIMPLE to do, but tedious. Simple, in that as long as you know the basics (YouTube) its not that the work is terribly hard. It’s more that it’s time consuming, and tedious lol. BUT…given the price you pay for stone work, I’m willing to take my time and enjoy the process. I actually like picking out my stones, and working it like a fun living puzzle.

Tyson, glazed over…wondering what he has agreed to.

Conclusion: The LOOK is absolutely STUNNING. The materials were the perfect choice. Although it may take us longer to complete that we over-confidently presumed, it’s going to be absolutely worth it and we are making great memories together in the process!

Living like everything is extraordinary, because it is.
